Smooth-Running Gates for Steep and Tight Driveways

Wellington Sliding Gate Installation

When there is no room for a gate to swing, or the driveway climbs too steeply for one, a sliding gate is often the answer. We design and install tracked and cantilever sliding gates across Wellington that glide open in a straight line and stay that way.

Sliding Gate Installation in Wellington

Wellington is full of driveways that make swing gates awkward: steep entrances off the road, short parking pads, and boundaries that sit right on the footpath. A sliding gate moves sideways along the fence line instead of sweeping an arc, so it does not care much about the slope in front of it and does not take up space inside your section. As experienced fence builders in Wellington, we build sliding gates as a complete system, with the track, rollers, guides and stops designed together.

A sliding gate is only as good as the ground it runs on and the frame it is built from. A twisted frame or an uneven track will make it bind, jump or wear out its wheels early. We take care over levels, footings and frame stiffness so the gate rolls freely by hand and is ready for a motor if you want one now or later.

Why Choose Us

Sliding Gate Installation Services in Wellington

Ideal for Tight Driveways

Sliding gates move sideways along the fence line instead of swinging out, making them perfect for tight, sloping or busy driveways where there is limited room for a traditional swing gate. That space-saving design keeps driveways clear and parking easy.

Strong Tracks and Rollers

We install quality tracks, rollers and guides that support the weight of your gate and keep it running smoothly, resisting sticking, jamming and wear from daily use and Wellington weather. Smooth tracks prevent sticking and wear, keeping your gate gliding.

Manual or Automatic

Your sliding gate can be manual or fitted with an automatic opener, giving you the freedom to start simple and upgrade later as your needs and budget change. Starting manual keeps costs down while leaving room to add automation later.

Secure Locking Options

We fit robust latches, locks and security features suited to your property, so your sliding gate provides strong protection and stays properly closed, even in strong winds. Strong locks matter on driveways, so we choose fittings that resist forced entry.

Level, Footings and Fencing Alignment

A sliding gate must be accurately aligned, so we prepare solid footings and align the track and fence line carefully, ensuring a smooth, quiet and reliable operation. Accurate alignment prevents jamming and wear, helping gates glide quietly and stay level.

Clean, Modern Appearance

Sliding gates look neat and professional in aluminium, steel or timber, adding value and kerb appeal to your property while offering practical, space-saving access. A well-built sliding gate frames your entrance, boosts street appeal and makes arriving home much easier.

Two Systems

Tracked vs Cantilever Sliding Gates

A tracked sliding gate rolls on wheels along a rail set into the driveway. It is a proven, cost-effective design and suits most flat or gently sloping entrances. The track does need to be kept clear of gravel, leaves and debris, and the driveway across the opening needs to be reasonably level.

A cantilever sliding gate has no track across the opening. Instead, the gate hangs from roller carriages mounted beside the opening and extends past them as a counterbalance. It is a good choice for gravel driveways, uneven ground or sites where debris would clog a track, but it needs more run-back space because the gate is longer than the opening itself.

We will look at your driveway surface, slope and available space and recommend the system that will run most reliably on your site.

Site Check

What We Need to Know Before Quoting

Sliding gates need a little more planning than swing gates. On our site visit we check:

  • Clear run-back space beside the opening
  • Level across the opening and the run-back
  • Driveway surface: concrete, asphalt or gravel
  • Retaining walls, trees or meters in the gate's path
  • Drainage so water does not pool in the track
  • Where the motor and power supply would sit
  • Room for a separate pedestrian gate
  • How the gate will be matched to your fence
Components

What Goes Into a Sliding Gate We Build

A sliding gate is a moving machine, and each part has a job. We spec the whole system together so nothing is undersized.

  • Stiff, square frame that will not rack over time
  • Ground track or cantilever roller carriages
  • Top guide rollers to keep the gate upright
  • Catch post or receiver at the closing end
  • End stops so the gate cannot run off its track
  • Infill to match your fence: slats, battens or mesh

Frames are commonly built in galvanised and powder-coated steel or aluminium. Our steel fencing page explains why steel is a popular choice where strength and security matter most.

Automation

Building Sliding Gates Ready for a Motor

Many sliding gates are automated, either straight away or a year or two later. Planning for that at the build stage saves cutting into a finished driveway. We can lay conduit for power and control cables, fit a gear rack to the gate, and leave a level pad for the motor. For openers, remotes, keypads and safety sensors, see our gate automation service.

Whether automated or manual, we set the gate so it moves freely by hand. A gate that needs to be forced is a gate that will wear out a motor.

Our Team

Why Choose Our Sliding Gate Installation Contractors in Wellington

Sliding gates suit tight, sloping and busy driveways, but they need accurate setout and quality components to run smoothly. Our sliding gate installation contractors prepare solid footings, align tracks and fence lines carefully and install rollers and guides that cope with daily use and Wellington weather. You can start with a manual gate and add automation later, and we fit strong locks and latches that keep the gate secure in wind. A level, well-built gate runs quietly and reliably for years. Clear quotes, tidy installation and honest practical advice give you a space-saving entrance that looks professional and works properly.

FAQ

Sliding Gate FAQs

A tracked gate needs clear space roughly equal to the width of the opening. A cantilever gate needs more, because the counterbalance section extends past the opening. We will measure your site and confirm what will fit.

Yes, as long as the line the gate travels along is reasonably level. The driveway can slope up or down towards the house; it is the slope across the opening that matters most. Where that is uneven, we can often adjust the design or levels to suit.

Not a lot. Keep the track clear of stones and leaves, and have the rollers and guides checked occasionally. Cantilever gates have no ground track, so they are even lower maintenance on that front.

Often, yes. We will check whether there is enough run-back space and whether the existing posts and fence can support the new layout. In many cases a new gate is built and the old one removed.

It depends on the opening width, system type, materials, groundwork and whether you want automation. Call 04 887 3480 or request a free estimate for a clear, no-obligation quote.
